Metal roofing, Brisbane: roofer in a harness driving screws into a new dark grey corrugated steel roof

Metal roofing work in Brisbane’s inner north

Metal roofing covers more than the full re-roof. On inner-north houses it’s also the roof on a new extension or deck, a skillion over a kitchen or patio, a carport, and the repairs that keep an older iron roof going.

New metal roofs on extensions, skillions and patios

An extension or skillion is usually roofed in steel because it can run at a much lower pitch than tiles. The roofer matches the profile and colour to the main roof, or picks a low-pitch profile where the slope is shallow, and flashes the join to the existing house.

Re-roofing in Colorbond

Replacing an old iron, tile or fibro roof with new steel is covered on the roof replacement page, and tile conversions on tile to Colorbond.

Metal roof repairs

Rust on corrugated iron and Colorbond usually starts at the screws, laps, cut ends and under flashings. Repairs replace loose or rusted screws, the worst sheets and failed flashings, and reseal around vents and skylights. Ask for the rusted areas to be photographed, so you can see whether repair or replacement makes sense.

Metal roofing costs in Brisbane

No inner-north roofer publishes metal roofing rates, so these are published Brisbane and national figures, each with its source. Profile, pitch, storeys and how many flashings and penetrations the roof has all move the price.

Metal roof profiles: corrugated, Trimdek and Klip-Lok

The profile is the shape the sheet is rolled into. It sets the look and, more practically, the lowest slope the sheet can drain at. Lysaght, BlueScope’s roofing brand, publishes these minimums:

Metal roof profiles and minimum roof slope

ProfileWhat it looks likeMinimum roof slope
Corrugated (Lysaght CUSTOM ORB)The “original corrugated steel profile”; can be laid flat or “sprung curved”5°
Trapezoidal rib (Lysaght TRIMDEK)“Bold trapezoidal ribs”; “suitable for low roof pitches”2°
Concealed-fix (Lysaght KLIP-LOK 700 CLASSIC)Wide pans with a bold rib, fixed with “concealed fixing clips”1° or 2° (subject to base metal thickness selected)
Concealed-fix (Lysaght KLIP-LOK 406)Narrower cover width with fluted pans1°

From Lysaght’s CUSTOM ORB, TRIMDEK and KLIP-LOK product pages, checked 22 October 2026. Other manufacturers roll similar profiles under their own names, with their own minimum slopes.

Corrugated is the traditional look on Queenslanders, and Lysaght describes it as suitable “from heritage homes to contemporary builds”. On a house built in 1946 or earlier in a character overlay, check the guide to re-roofing a Queenslander before choosing a different profile.

Colorbond or Zincalume: which steel for your roof?

Both are BlueScope steel. Zincalume is the unpainted one: BlueScope describes it as “an aluminium / zinc / magnesium alloy coated steel” with “a regular spangled surface”. Colorbond is BlueScope’s pre-painted steel, with “22 striking colours in the core range”, six also in a Matt finish and six in a Metallic finish.

For heat, BlueScope notes that “Unpainted metal coated roofs, such as ZINCALUME® steel, have a low thermal emittance so perform differently to conventional painted surfaces”, and that its reflectance “can be variable depending on weathering”. Among the Colorbond colours, Lysaght describes Surfmist as “Light and reflective, known for its excellent thermal values”. Ask the roofer which steel and colour they recommend for your roof, and what the BlueScope warranty covers at your address.

Low-pitch and skillion metal roofs

Flat-looking roofs on modern extensions, patios and skillions are where the profile matters most. Corrugated sheet has a 5° minimum, so a shallower roof needs a deeper rib such as Trimdek (2°) or a concealed-fix profile such as Klip-Lok (from 1°). Lysaght says Klip-Lok’s concealed clips “allow for superb watertightness”, and it suits “near flat roof planes”. Long sheet runs on a low pitch also need the right fixings and gutter sizes, so ask the roofer how the water will leave the roof.

Who can install a metal roof in Queensland

Metal roofing is roof and wall cladding work in the QBCC’s licence classes: “Select and install roof cladding other than terracotta and concrete roof tiles”, along with flashings and rainwater goods, and “Refurbish and maintain roofs, excluding painting roofs”. The QBCC says you need a contractor licence for building work “valued over $3,300”. Check the roofer’s licence and class on the QBCC licensee register.

What to have ready

  • What the job is: a new roof on an extension or patio, a re-roof, or a repair
  • The roof’s pitch if you know it, or a photo from the side
  • The existing profile and colour if the new roof has to match
  • The roof area or dimensions, and how many storeys up it is
  • Photos of rust, loose screws or leaks for a repair

Common questions

Is Colorbond the same as metal roofing?

Colorbond is BlueScope’s brand of pre-painted steel. Metal roofing also includes unpainted Zincalume, other steel brands, aluminium and copper. Ask the roofer which brand and base metal thickness they’re quoting.

Can a new metal roof match my existing corrugated iron?

Usually the profile can be matched closely, but new steel won’t look like weathered galvanised iron straight away. On an extension, ask whether the whole roof should be done at once for an even finish.

Can I paint a Colorbond or Zincalume roof?

Yes, with a primer and paint made for metal roofs. Roof painting needs a painting licence class rather than a roofing one; see roof painting.

Can metal roofing go over my old roof?

Ask the roofer. Stripping the old roof first lets the battens, fixings and tie-down be checked and the new sheets fixed into sound timber, so ask what laying over the old roof would hide.

Do I need sarking under a metal roof?

Ask the roofer what they recommend for your house and pitch. Sarking or a foil-faced blanket is often laid under new steel roofs, and it adds to the price, so check it’s listed in the quote.
