Gutter replacement, Brisbane: roofer on a ladder fixing a new Colorbond gutter to a highset Queenslander, old gutter on the lawn

What gutter replacement and repairs cover

Gutters fail in a few predictable ways: rust along the bottom and at the joints, sagging runs that hold water instead of draining it, leaking corners and stop ends, and downpipes that are split or too few for the roof. A roofer either repairs the failed section or replaces the run, and checks the fascia board the gutter hangs on while it’s off.

Gutter replacement

The old gutters come down, the fascia is checked, and new gutters go up on brackets with a steady fall to the outlets. Colorbond steel in a quad or half-round profile is the usual choice on houses; square-line and fascia-style gutters suit flatter, more modern rooflines. The new gutter is usually matched to the roof colour or the trim.

Gutter repairs

A single rusted length, a leaking joint or a run that has lost its fall can often be fixed on its own: the roofer re-seals or replaces that section and re-hangs the gutter so water reaches the downpipe. When rust has spread along most runs, ask whether replacing the lot costs much more than patching.

Box gutters

A box gutter sits inside the roof line, between two roof sections or behind a parapet, so when it blocks or rusts through the water comes inside rather than over the edge. Box gutters are usually custom-folded to fit, which is why they’re priced after the roofer has measured and looked at the outlet and overflow.

Downpipes and fascias

Downpipes carry the water to the stormwater system; too few of them, or a blocked one, and the gutter overflows in a Brisbane downpour. Fascias are the boards behind the gutter. Rotten timber fascia is often found when old gutters come off, and is replaced in timber or steel before the new gutter goes on.

Gutter replacement costs in Brisbane

Gutter jobs are priced by the metre, plus each downpipe and any fascia. Height, access, box gutters and the number of corners move the price more than the gutter itself.

Yakka Labour is a labour-hire company’s national cost guide with a Brisbane row (published 1 October 2026); its figures include GST, and it notes “Highset homes need longer downpipes and more ladder work”. The roofer prices your job after measuring it.

The gutter replacement cost guide has more published rates, including fascias and gutter guard, and explains which figures are installed prices and which are materials only.

Repair or replace, and gutters on Queenslanders

Repair makes sense when one length or joint has failed and the rest of the steel is sound. Replacement makes sense when rust shows along several runs, when the gutters have been patched before, or when the roof is being replaced anyway, because the gutters come off for the new sheets.

Highset Queenslanders bring their own work: long downpipes, ladder work at height, and verandah roofs with their own gutters. On a character house, ask the roofer to match the existing gutter profile and colour, and check with Brisbane City Council before changing the look of a house in a character overlay.

Downpipes go to the stormwater, never the sewer

Queensland’s Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 (s 80) treats “roof gutters, downpipes, subsoil drains and stormwater drainage” as a stormwater installation, and an owner “must not allow” any part of it to be connected to a sanitary drain or an on-site sewage facility.

Who can replace gutters in Queensland

The QBCC says you need a contractor licence for building work “valued over $3,300”. Gutters sit in two QBCC licence classes:

  • Roof and wall cladding, which includes “Fabricate and install rainwater goods” along with metal roofs and flashings.
  • Metal fascias and gutters, which covers “Fabricate and install rainwater goods including, and associated with, metal fascias and gutters.”

Check any roofer’s licence and class on the QBCC licensee register before work starts.

What to have ready

  • Roughly how many metres of gutter, or which sides of the house, and how many downpipes
  • Lowset, highset or two storeys, and whether there are box gutters or verandah gutters
  • What’s wrong: rust, sagging, overflowing in rain, leaking joints or rotten fascia
  • Photos from the ground of the gutters, downpipes and fascia

Common questions

How much does gutter replacement cost per metre in Brisbane?

A northside Brisbane contractor publishes “$60 to $80 per linear metre for supply and installation of a new gutter system”. Downpipes and fascia are extra. The gutter replacement cost guide has the other published rates.

Should I replace all the gutters or just the rusted run?

If one run has rusted and the rest is sound, a section can be replaced on its own. Ask the roofer to show you, in photos, where the rest of the steel is at, and to price both options in writing.

Why do my gutters overflow in heavy rain when they’re clean?

Usually the gutter has lost its fall and holds water, the outlets are too small, or there aren’t enough downpipes for the roof area. A roofer can re-hang the run or add an outlet and downpipe.

Can gutters be replaced without replacing the fascia?

Yes, if the fascia is sound. Old timber fascia is often rotten behind the gutter, so ask for it to be checked once the old gutters are off and priced separately if it needs replacing.

Do I need a QBCC-licensed roofer for gutters?

For building work valued over $3,300, yes, in a class that covers rainwater goods, such as roof and wall cladding or metal fascias and gutters. Check the class on the QBCC licensee register.
